We create the tone and circumstances of our lives by using the Law of Attraction. It is the principle by which all things manifest (or don’t manifest) and it operates in every aspect of our lives, whether we’re aware of it or not. Becoming aware of it and consciously working with it can totally transform your life.
When the movie The Secret came out years ago, it received a lot of attention. When I watched the first version of the movie, which included Esther Hicks speaking about the Abraham-Hicks Teachings, I began vibrating with excitement. I knew I was onto something big.
Up until that time, after years of meditating and sitting at the feet of spiritual teachers for over 30 years, I was able to experience happiness and even bliss during meditation. However, I was clueless about how to deal with my daily life and the upsets it triggered within me. There was quite a gap between my inner realizations and my outer life.
Learning about the Law of Attraction was a missing piece. I began to see how I was responsible for what I had been creating in my life, and I began experimenting with what I was learning. I immediately began to feel better. I felt myself in alignment with a strong, grounded energy current that was gently pulling me along into a broader, deeper life of joy, excitement and possibility.
Everything, including us. This fact is discovered and confirmed by all who look deeply and intently into any arena of life, including scientists, meditators, and philosophers. Plato, Newton, Carnegie, Beethoven, Shakespeare, Einstein and many spiritual masters have spoken of this fact and of the Law of Attraction, though they may not have called it that.
Every living thing has a unique energy signature, a vibration. As humans, our vibration changes by what we focus on. When you look at a beautiful sunset or watch a puppy playing, your vibrations will soften. If you pay attention, you will feel a quality of openness and love.
Conversely, if you check in with yourself while watching the 5 o’clock news or a political debate, you’ll probably notice that your vibrations will shift into a state of contraction, actually pulling away from the quality of love. In other words, you will feel negative feelings.
Our vibrations change according to where our attention is focused. If your attention is focused predominantly on thoughts of lack or resistance, you will feel a negative energy pervade your being.
On the other hand, if you shift your attention to the peace in the space between thoughts, you will feel yourself aligning with the love and wellbeing that you already are. In the space between thoughts you will become conscious of yourSelf as Awareness, which is ALREADY at peace.
It is an energetic law of the universe that like attracts like. We’ve all heard the expression “Birds of a feather flock together.” This is just another way of referring to the Law of Attraction. In the form that we manifest here, we are magnetic beings. Whatever vibration we hold within mind magnetically draws to us more of the same.
Ever noticed how when you’re in a wonderful mood, people around you seem happier, more polite, and easy to be around? Or when you’re in a funk, people cut you off on the freeway or treat you rudely in the grocery store? That’s the Law of Attraction at work. If we focus on negative thoughts and feelings and identify with them, we attract to ourselves more of that very same energy.
Years ago, before I understood the Law of Attraction, I experimented with using affirmations to try to uplift the quality of my life and tap into abundance. I diligently repeated them, but instead of the upliftment I was after, I felt a sinking feeling, because it felt false. After awhile I felt silly doing it and stopped.
What I know now is that we don’t create or change our circumstances with just our words. We create our lives with our beliefs, which create thoughts. Then the beliefs and thoughts create our emotions. Further, that whole continuum of causation creates what we experience.
If you say, “I’m prosperous and joyous,” and you don’t believe it because there is a stack of bills on your desk, then your beliefs and feelings are saying something very different from what your words are saying. If your feelings and beliefs are vibrating an energy of lack and not enough money, that is what you draw to yourself, via the Law of Attraction.
So what to do?
One of the beginning steps in working with the Law of Attraction is to reach for a thought that feels better than the one you’ve been focusing on. If you’ve been feeding attention to “I don’t have enough money to pay my bills” you won’t be able to jump all the way to “I’m living in abundance,” all in one leap. So, instead, find a thought which is true – one you actually believe in.
You’ll feel a pleasantly solid feeling and a sense of relief in your being if the thought is one you actually believe. If the thought is too big a stretch for you, and you don’t quite believe it, you’ll probably feel fear, or some other negative emotion. So, therefore, that particular thought won’t take you into the positive direction you want to go in.
For example, you could say to yourself, “I am going to brainstorm ways that I can make more money. I can list things I love to do then I can look through the help wanted ads in the paper and see what brings positive feelings.
Or I could write up a flyer and list my skills and post them around and see what happens.” This exact thought stream may not apply to you, but there is one that will. Just by making the attempt and having the intention to reach for a thought that brings relief, that thought will form in your mind.
If you keep focusing attention on this new direction of thought, you will literally change your vibration. And, since we are magnetic beings, by keeping as much attention as you can in this new direction, you can’t help but attract to yourself better and better circumstances.
The next step in practicing the Law of Attraction after learning how to reach for a better feeling thought, is to rest your attention in the You that is already at peace, which you can experience by shifting your attention to the space between thoughts. Remember that by the Law of Attraction, wherever we place our attention reflects outward and creates the circumstances of our lives. By shifting attention to the True Reality that you are, not only does suffering unwind, you will also notice that your outer life will shift in sync with the peace you come to know yourself to be.
We are always vibrating something. Therefore we are always creating something, by drawing to us whatever is in sync with the thoughts we think and where we keep our attention.
Let’s say half the time you train yourself to consciously focus attention on finding a new fulfilling job. You can envision it and feel how wonderful it would be to be doing something that makes your heart sing, and you can feel the wonderful feeling of being paid well.
Then, let’s say that the other half of the time you’re saying to yourself, “When am I going to get a good job? I’m tired of not having enough money to do what I want. I’m tired of working jobs I don’t like!”
See what’s happening here? It’s like taking one step forward then one step back. One step forward and one step back. Your positive thoughts and feelings begin attracting new possibilities and circumstances. They begin making their way to you.
Then when you listen to the resistant thoughts, and feel the feelings of lack, your vibrations change. You are now in sync with the lack rather than the fulfillment of what you want, and you draw to yourself circumstances that sabotage the new possibilities. This feedback system is our emotions.
At the core, there are really only two emotions: a positive one or a negative one. If we’re feeling negative emotions, we’re focusing on resistance. If we’re feeling positive feelings, we’re in alignment with our innate flow of wellbeing.
Using this feedback system, we can “course correct” and deliberately shift our attention to a thought that feels better, then after that to one that feels even better, and so on.
Always. If we miss the cues of our Emotional Feedback System, we can always take a look around at the content of our daily lives to see what we’re creating. This will show us, quite graphically, what we predominantly focus on.
If our lives are filled with conflict, lack, or negativity, that is valuable feedback, telling us we have been focusing on painful thoughts. We've been identifying with the painful stories that appear in our mind.
It was such a relief to see that I could consciously participate in the creation of the quality of my life, and it was quite exhilarating. At first, by purposely focusing my thoughts into a positive direction, I noticed old thoughts and limiting beliefs about money and self worth began to unwind. I began to feel a new feeling of power that I never felt before.
After awhile, however, I saw that my understanding of the Law of Attraction wasn’t the whole answer to aligning with happiness, though it is an important step along the way. I realized that working with it needed to be balanced by bringing more attention to Awareness and shifting my allegiance there.
While my life had improved considerably after working with the Law of Attraction, I still kept running into some of the same fears. I’d consciously shift attention to a more positive scenario, yet somehow it felt like a part of me was being neglected in an unhealthy way.
I realized that before I could move forward with my life I needed to let go of some old residues from past hurts that were affecting me on the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual levels.
Both as part of my training in energy healing and for my own personal healing, I worked with a medical intuitive. I learned how to release residues in the body.
While that was an important step in healing, I could feel it still didn't get at the deeper levels of the suffering I was experiencing. It wasn't until later, when I immersed myself in the Advaita Teachings of Ramana Maharshi and Rupert Spira that I realized I am the Awareness that everything arises in.
Within this Awareness that we are, is peace. In fact, it is the ONLY place of true, lasting peace.
I learned to bring attention to the places of constriction within the body, to allow them to be as they were, and to welcome them. I saw that everything that arises within Awareness is made of energy. The energy within us can take many forms, such as anger, fear, and etc. but all these forms are of the same essence we are made of – Pure Energy.
Then, by the Law of Attraction, as I embraced all that was within me, and rested attention in the peace that we all are in the space between thoughts, my life began to shift and reflect where I was focused – on peace.
It is a natural part of life on this plane to have desires arise. Desire isn’t “good” or “bad.” It is a natural outcome of identifying with being a separate body. However, as we begin to bring more attention to ourselves as Pure Awareness, the form of desire changes.
Usually, we start out focusing on wanting something that is just for ourselves, such as more money, a better house, or a happier relationship. In so doing, we identify ourselves as a separate body / mind. We are coming from a belief in lack and separation. “I am just this little part of the Universe over here, and I want a new car.”
The very fact that we are identified with being a part instead of the Whole that we all are together, makes it pretty impossible for the Universal Life Forces to grant us exactly what we want. We kind of shoot ourselves in the foot.
The Pure Energy of Life flows through All that is, sustains ALL that is, and IS ALL that is. We ARE the Pure Energy of Life. When we look out from that perspective, we are aligned with ALL that is. When our desires arise out of the awareness that we ARE One with the Whole, then the desire is fulfilled by the Whole.
However, if what is true for you is that you really do want a new car, then turn your attention within to the place of longing within. It will generally be accompanied by fear. Don’t judge yourself for wanting a new car. Bring your attention to the longing / fear itself. See it as just a vibration.
It is just energy, made out of the same energy that YOU are. Occupy the same space that it occupies. As you continue to do that, gradually, the energy will release and you will begin to experience yourself as Awareness – One with the Whole, not just a part.
What I’ve noticed in doing this is that as the fear lets go, then events on the outside shift to reflect greater harmony and things work themselves out. If your old car is falling apart and you truly need a new car, the situation will sort itself out in very unpredictable ways.

The Law Of Attraction Is Impersonal
Many have criticized those who teach about the Law of Attraction, saying that it encourages superficiality, desire and greed. However, the Law of Attraction itself is an impersonal law. It is simply a force, like gravity.
If you drop something it will fall. It doesn’t matter what it is. There is no discrimination on what is being dropped. The force of gravity will pull it down. Period. Likewise, the Law of Attraction brings to us whatever we focus on, be it positive or negative.
Fortunately, we’ve all been given an amazing Emotional Feedback System. This not only gives you useful feedback that can keep you in the stream of experiencing positive things in your life, it also keeps you in the stream of love and goodwill.
If someone focuses on accessing the Law of Attraction for negative purposes, or strictly for personal gain, eventually they’ll notice they’re feeling quite negative as a result. That automatically creates a feedback system and self-teaching process.
No one likes to feel sustained negativity and eventually we learn to stop doing whatever it is that is creating it. As long as you follow this inner compass, it will keep you on course. As you begin to use this feedback system of yours, you'll be much less willing to feel crummy, especially now that you know you have a choice.
There are many doorways that can take you deeper into the love and truth of yourself: understanding the Law of Attraction, allowing your emotions to arise and embracing them, and exploring the peace that you already ARE, which you can become aware of in the space between thoughts.
Each of us is on our own unique path. Different things are right for each of us at different times. You are the one who will know what the next step is for you by how you feel inside when you turn toward it.
As you become more aware of the Law of Attraction, you'll become conscious that your energy is always creating something, either positive or negative.
Then, by making deliberate choices about where you place your attention, your life will gradually shift into a much more joyful state. You will no longer feel like a victim of outside forces. Balancing this knowledge with becoming conscious of yourself as Awareness can totally transform your life.
