Getting Used To Feeling Good

Lately I’ve noticed a curious phenomenon in us humans. Sometimes when there is a stream of things going poorly we get used to that state. Then, when something wonderful wants to enter one’s life, we sometimes squeeze off that channel of joy and find ways to negate the wonderfulness. At times we will even unconsciously or consciously push it away!

Sound familiar?

Ever wonder what’s up with that?Feeling Good

We Create What We Feel

Well, here’s the deal. The thoughts we habitually think create feelings we habitually feel. Those feelings are actually vibrational frequencies that you live in and emit out into the universe.

There is a vibrational law of the universe called The Law of Attraction that ensures that like attracts like. So, if you are emitting a vibration of “things always turn out badly,” guess what you keep creating! You guessed it. Because you manifest what you FEEL (vibrate), you attract circumstances that turn out badly for you.

It gets worse. Unless you do something to consciously shift your thoughts and feelings about “things always turn out badly,” that vibration becomes your “set point,” so to speak.

Then let’s say that some of the time you also think thoughts and feel feelings that are in the positive end of the spectrum. You envision a new home you’d like to live in. You imagine what peace and harmony would feel like in your work place or relationships and that feels good to you. You think about what it would be like to be wealthy and prosperous.

So, because of those vibrations that you emit when you are feeling good, you attract positive kinds of circumstances as well, to the same degree that you stay focused in a positive direction.

Your Vibrational Set Point

Just for an example, let’s say that 80% of the time your focus is on fear and other negative thoughts and feelings about things not going well, and 20% of the time your focus is on positive thoughts and expectations about things going great – envisioning best case scenario instead of worst case scenario.

In this example, your “set point” vibration is weighted in the 80% of doom and gloom. So when the possibilities of joy come in (drawn in with 20% of your energy being focused in that direction), it feels strange and foreign because it is a different vibration than the 80% – what you’re most used to.

“What we see depends mainly on what we look for.”

John Lubbock

It is an aspect of human nature that we cling to what is predictable and “known” even if we are miserable with our “known”! Then there is a tendency to be fearful and skeptical of what is different and new – even if it is something wonderful that could really feel good to us. We’re interesting critters, aren’t we. :-)

Things that are different and new cause us to push past our comfort zones, to grow. Often there is a tendency to fortify around that limit or edge of our comfort zone and be a naysayer to anything that threatens that, even if it is something your heart has yearned for.

So, here’s the cool thing. We can PRACTICE feeling good and change that 80% / 20% (or whatever it happens to be) ratio. We can consciously acclimate ourselves to actually feeling GREAT! You wouldn’t think this would take practice but it actually does for some of us. And generally, we know who we are. :-)

In a moment we’ll talk about ways we can practice feeling good. Before that, I want to talk about the tipping point.

The Tipping Point

Okay. We’ve decided that we want to feel good about life, ourselves, and the world around us. We’re practicing different ways to keep our thoughts / feelings / vibrations in the positive end of the spectrum more and more.

At first, you may go from 80% negative / 20% positive to 79.5% negative / 20.5% feeling good. May not seem like much but it gets things moving and shifting. If you keep practicing you’ll spend more time in the positive zone. You’ll gradually start feeling better and better and your life circumstances will shift to reflect your inner state.

After awhile with consistently, deliberately working with shifting your thoughts / feelings to feeling good, let’s say you’re at a place of 50.25% positive and 49.75% negative on average. Congratulations! You’ve reached the tipping point. Even that 0.25% over the threshold is a huge amount. It is here that your positive energy has gathered momentum and new doors of opportunity open up for you in many areas of your life.

“I am convinced that life in a physical body is meant to be an
ecstatic
experience.”

Shakti Gawain

It may not be possible for someone who is still living on the physical plane to stay in a place of 100% positive energy all the time, even for the most evolved beings among us. And I admit, it is silly to put a mathematical number on something that can’t be quantified in that way.

BUT, what I do know from my own experience is that you can make a HUGE difference in the quality of your emotional and mental outlook by deliberately working with uplifting your thoughts and feelings. And the results are so incredibly worth the effort!

Okay, let’s get to the good stuff.

So, You Want To Feel Good

Awareness Well, the first place to start with this and all situations involving self-growth, is to become aware of the “problem.” Be on the lookout for this dynamic in your life: you feel the possibility of something good and wonderful that wants to enter your world but you pull away from it or negate it.

Once you see this in yourself, don’t make yourself wrong for doing this. Just recognize that you’ve discovered a very human dynamic within yourself.

Indulgence So, rather than letting your mind run amuck about all the “wrong” things about this wonderfulness that is trying to enter your life, instead try something different. Look inside for the place where you can feel the GOOD feelings about the possibilities of this new energy. Depending on how accustomed you are to allowing yourself to feel good, you may only be able to feel a small sliver of this positive energy.

“A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes.”

Hugh Downs

That’s okay. Go with what you’ve got. Keep bringing your attention into this good feeling place. When the old habits cause you to pull your attention out of it, just come back to it as much as you can. Indulge in feeling good. Revel in the feelings, like a child with an ice cream cone. Let the positive energies wash through you. Luxuriate in them. Amp it up.

Here’s an example. Let’s say someone offered you a fabulous new job. In your imagination, envision best case scenario. You make big bucks, you love the people you work with and they adore you, you have a lot of freedom, you feel creative and alive … Let your imagination run wild and FEEL how all that feels. Keep feeding attention to the positive aspects and your ability to let in good things will grow.

What About When Things Aren’t Going Well?

As you gradually acclimate yourself to feeling good, there will still be rough seas at times. This comes from a combination of factors.

One factor is that on this plane we have a buffer of time between when we envision and feel something, and when the manifestation of it shows up in our lives. So as you change your energy, you’ll need to be patient while the effects of your old thinking wash through.

“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at this moment.”

Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose, Page 41

Here is another factor in the ups and downs of our lives: As we focus on feeling good, that sets in motion a chain of events that catapults us through the limits of our comfort zone. In other words, we grow. As we grow, we enter new and unfamiliar territory. It is uncomfortable at first. Then, as we continue to focus on the positive, we gradually become at peace with this new world we’ve entered, which now becomes a larger comfort zone than our previous comfort zone.

Then guess what happens. You got it. The whole thing happens all over again. A desire for more of something is born within you and it brings good feelings so you reach for it. As you do so, that energy pulls you up and out of your comfort zone, which is uncomfortable at first…

… And so it goes.

Find Or Build Your Anchor

When you find yourself in one of those “uncomfortable” or even downright excruciating times, it is great to have a home base or “anchor” place inside you that isn’t changed by external circumstances, thoughts or turbulent feelings.

This is a place where you can “go” inside by placing attention there. Your anchor or home base can be a central thought, a spiritual mantra, a person or teacher you feel unwavering love for, or a visualization of a lovely place where you feel safe and cared for. Whatever anchor you chose, make sure that when you go there that the feelings that are evoked are 100% positive.

It is best to establish this anchor place BEFORE things get wonky in your life. In other words, get it established when you’re meditating or during a time when you’re feeling relatively good and have some quiet time.

Here’s an example of an anchor:

When I was very young I began asking the question “Who Am I?” within and found that question pointed me inward, beyond my mind and the circumstances of my physical life. It takes me to a place of pure energy, creativity, love, bliss – everything positive, free and unfettered. Through the years that question has evolved into simply saying “I” which now does the same thing for me.

Whenever I feel tossed around I go within and repeat “I,” usually as one long, drawn out sound. I do this continuously throughout the day, as often as I remember to.

“Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

Harold Whitman

So, whatever anchor you pick or create, you can go to that “place” and keep the wear and tear to a minimum when life gets churned up for you. This will also help you keep your vibration in a much more positive place so you don’t get sucked into whatever negativity arises in the situation. Staying with your anchor will help you go through the growth experience much quicker.

More Ways To Get The Good Feelings Going

Self-Talk If you notice that you are pulling away from feeling good, gently talk to yourself inside. Say something like “I allow the good. I open and allow all good things to flow in.” Words are powerful vibrations and the things you tell yourself immediately set a positive or negative flow into motion, creating a strong effect within you.

Trust Your Feelings Pay attention to your Emotional Feedback Guide. Notice that when you think or do something that is in line with your heart and wellbeing you feel positive emotions. Conversely, when you think or do something that takes you in the opposite direction from where you really want to be, you feel negative emotions.

As you follow this amazing inner guide of yours, you can “course correct” and keep yourself aligned with what is truly best for you, without having to rely on your mind to sort out all the pros and cons. Also, with following this inner guidance, you’ll feel increasingly acclimated to feeling good.

Wellbeing Workshop Consciously stretch past your limits on how good you allow yourself to feel by using your imagination on a regular basis.

Take time to do a “Wellbeing Workshop” with yourself. Find a quiet space in your day. Sit with your eyes closed and just watch your breath for a few minutes. When you’re ready, imagine living, doing and being everything you have ever wanted. Just start with whatever comes to mind first. Then make it even bigger.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

Albert Einstein

If you like to travel, imagine every place you could go to, then imagine actually going to all those places. Actually BE there in your inner vision.

If you want deep spiritual realization, imagine the deepest, widest love and light you can imagine, then surrender even more deeply into that and imagine it even more pure and divine.

If you want a new home, imagine every possible thing you could have in it. Then make it even more detailed to your tastes and needs. See where it is located in your perfect location. Envision the perfect neighbors.

You’ll feel the mind resisting this exercise because it will stretch you past your “known” universe. That’s okay. Just don’t follow the mind’s train of thoughts. Bring your attention back to your positive imagination.

Be outrageous. Then be even more outrageous. Have fun with it! The point is to extend your reach past your normal every day concept of what you think you can have, do or be.

If imagination doesn’t come easy to you, try writing. Write out a description of your ideal as if you were telling someone a story. Then tell it again and make it even bigger and even more awesome. Ignore the negative thoughts and just stay with the positive flow.

Or if you’re a “feeler,” get in touch with your favorite feelings and indulge and expand on them.

Feeling Good Should, Well … Feel GOOD

Pick the exercises or suggestions above (or below) that feel the best to you. Like the old song says, “different strokes for different folks.” If any of it feels like hard work, skip that suggestion for now and try another of the suggestions that brings a surge – or maybe just a flicker at first – of excitement when you read it.

“Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.”

Jim Rohn

To emphasize, as you begin your feeling good efforts and start to make your vibration more positive, it will feel strange and uncomfortable. But when you are on track with your own inner guidance there will also be a feeling of joy and aliveness as you begin to sense the light at the end of the tunnel. You may need to adapt these suggestions to yourself to find the techniques that evoke that feeling of joy and aliveness for you. Have fun!
